Books I Read

I’m back at work so my reading/listening was sporadic this month. I had a good mix of fiction and non-fiction, and although there weren’t any 5-star books this month, I had five 4 star books which counts as a win. I hope you enjoy these books I read and find several to add to your TBR as you get ready for the summer!

Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick (3 stars)

I’ve been an Anna Kendrick fan since Twilight, so this was a fun book for me. A little chaotic at times, but that seems appropriate for her personality. PSA: she talks openly about drugs, sex, and her vagina; it can be a bit awkward as an audiobook in the car if you forget where it left off and you aren’t alone when you start the car again. If you are looking for an autobiography to read, this one is short, fun, easy to read, and gives insight into a lot of what was going on behind the scenes (something I always like). ⠀

The Admissions by Meg Mitchell Moore (3 stars)

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. As a working wife and mother that just went through the college admissions process with two of my kids, this book resonated with me. And yet I’m not sure this is one I’d rush to recommend. It’s complicated.

There was just SO. MUCH. GOING ON. All with one family and all at the same time. It was a lot to take. So while there were things I liked about the book, it’s also one that I don’t feel compelled to recommend (I also wouldn’t tell someone not to read it if I saw them in the checkout line with it- something I’ve done once to the mortification of my children).

The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda (4 stars)

Another winner from Megan Miranda! It’s totally predictable until wham! Nope, not what you thought. Then when you figure it out again, she’s got another twist.

I love books like this because they are engaging and super fun to read. I especially love it when the author pulls you in from the beginning with a plot and good characters and keeps you with both. Add this one to your TBR. ⠀

All We Ever Wanted Was Everything by Janelle Brown (3 stars)

I won’t tell you not to read this, but I will tell you I can recommend tons of other books I would recommend you read first. I definitely liked Pretty Things and Watch Me Disappear more and would recommend them before this one. ⠀

The Scholar by Dervla McTiernan (3 stars)

I am very happy to have found Dervla McTiernan! The second book in the Cormac Reilly series, The Scholar, is twisty and entertaining. The Scholar at times seems predictable which only showcases McTiernan’s ability to weave a story.

Looking forward to book 3, The Good Turn.

Under Pressure by Lisa Damour (4 stars)

As the mother of a daughter and two sons, I appreciated the real-world examples and solutions in Under Pressure and the fact that Damour acknowledges the many way things are different for boys and girls.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. Straightforward language, practical advice. Add this to your arsenal of parenting and/or personal development books.

The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel (4 stars)

Just like Station Eleven, the writing is beautiful and the story is unsettling because the characters are familiar in both the best and worst things about them. But do not pick this up expecting Station Eleven. It is its own story. Fall in love with it for what it offers on its own.

The White Princess by Philippa Gregory (3 stars)

Loved Elizabeth of York, but wasn’t fond of many other characters in the book. Also, this one seemed to drag and then it felt like it cut off abruptly. Still ❤️ Philippa, though!!! ⠀

Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner (3 stars)

I really enjoyed this! Good escapism with characters you connect with. ⠀

Add this book to your TBR, especially with summer coming up!

The Story Keeper by Lisa Wingate (4 stars)

Such a feel-good story! I love stories about the Appalachians and this had new twists that I loved.

Wingate does a great job of weaving multiple stories and creates characters that make you want to cheer them on.

Add this to your TBR!!!! ⠀

The Boy from the Woods by Harlan Corbin (3 stars)

This was an enjoyable book with well developed characters and a twisty story line.

I enjoyed this and recommend it for a book when you don’t have that book you are DYING to read; parts of it were full of action and suspense, but parts were fairly predictable so I gave it 3 stars overall.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris (4 stars)

This book is both heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. The epilogue and author’s note at the end almost broke me. This might not be the best time to read about the Holocaust, but add this to your TBR. Your heart needs this. ⠀

Watch Me Disappear by Janelle Brown (3 stars)

I initially read this because I loved Pretty Things (I read it last month) so much. This was an enjoyable, keep-you-guessing book. Pick this one up when you just want to be entertained and aren’t expecting too much. ⠀

How is your reading going? Are you still in quarantine with plenty of time to read but no attention span or are you back at work with no time but longing for some fabulous fiction? I hope you found some great suggestions here! Have you read any of these books or authors? Give them a shout out!
